Hourglass Sands
04:05
|
|||
Once, I looked out on the ocean
It was pushing the horizon
And eating up the skyline
Once, I looked into a mirror
It was turning up the corners
Of my lips into a smile
If you look a little closer
You’ll notice it’s familiar
It winks at you in many little ways
If you dig a little deeper
The fragments of illusion
Will get under your fingernails
They went sifting through my hands
The hourglass sands
On a distant beach
I thought my grip was firm
That I held it in my palm
But I woke and the dream was gone
If you look a little closer
You’ll notice it’s familiar
It winks at you in many little ways
If you dig a little deeper
The fragments of illusion
Will get under your fingernails
If you find the house in the woods
With the smoke in the chimney and the water in the brook
If you find the land of milk and honey…and money
Won’t you let me know
Forest floor, soft underfoot
Subtle art, seldom understood
No one knows the secrets that you keep
Tucked away under the pillow where you sleep
Look a little closer
You’ll notice it’s familiar
It winks at you in many little ways
If you dig a little deeper
The fragments of illusion
Will get under your fingernails

Winters
03:48
|
|||
Geraniums survive
The winters of our love
February marks
The passage of time
Wilted and withered
Salmon petals push
A faint pink kiss
Half wiped off your lips
Soft velvet still bleeds
When crushed between your teeth
More than you would expect
From a rose on its last breath
Say that something’s missing
Know it when you find it
Starting something new
Didn’t think you minded
It’s a bitter pill
Don’t think I can swallow
I could get upset
Or leave it to fallow
Top of the mountain
City down below
Walls are caving in
Foundations were hollow
Does it have to be this way
Breaking down the brittle leaves
With my fingertips
How did it come to this?
And though (and though)
It might feel strange (it might feel strange)
You’re free from the (you’re free from the)
Entanglements of
Cruel circumstance

Citadel Passage
04:13
|
|||
It was early in the month of June
You were loving me loving you
Could it be that you were not loving me
Or was it just a nervous whisper in my ear
The clock struck 72
Can I have this dance with you
When the music started in you pulled me out back
To the foggy citadel passage
Guess it’s time to hit the road
Got no particular place to go
I drive under the desert sky
Peeling layers off of my mind
It was early one morning June
Summer heat was overdue
Is it penalty or privilege
To be gifted vision beyond reach
To stand in the sand beyond the beach

End of the Cold Days
03:55
|
|||
And that was all
It was the end of the cold days
We entered the bar
Dust blew into our faces
Why does my heart
Always choose these places
At the edges of town
Amidst the desolation
What are these pieces
You have the arms of a monster
They’re sewn right on, right on, right on you
As though they belonged to
A creature assembled
Seeking warmth
As though you were drawn to
The promethean fire
The train is on the track
The rabbit is in the hat
Spanish boomerang
Why don’t we go and smoke out back
And just give up
Running around and out of luck
But when the day is done
There are a few things I could not give up
